STANSTED FC 3 - 2 BURNHAM RAMBLERS FC

Essex Senior League, Premier Division

PLAYED AT HARGRAVE PARK  SATURDAY 6TH MARCH 2010

MATCH ATTENDANCE 42

STANSTED  (1)   3                                    BURNHAM RAMBLERS  (2) 2

(AARON BEST  2  DANNY HOPKINS 70       (  BILLY HUNT 10  19)
DANNY CORNWELL  87)

This fire cracker of a contest played out against a backdrop of early spring sunshine, but still serving notice that the chill of winter had not entirely
given hold of its grip was indeed a marvellous advert for the step 5 County League and far beyond such was its all round intensity of quality, but in
the final analysis decided in favour of Terry and his players because their all round committment desire shere will to win was unrelenting

this paying more lip service to the truest of cliche "its not over until the fat lady sings" as the best title race for many a year gathered increased
momentum amidst scenes of unbridaled joy amongst the home contingent as with the clock fast running down a quality curling free kick by skipper Andy Oxby kept its leg's found the head of leader of the line Danny Cornwell and the ex Bury Town striker did the rest looping his header over visiting custodian
Matt Belcher high into the centre of goal from close range before being swamped by delighted teammates fully understanding the magnitude of its
collective worth, (take your pick completed double over the league leaders, a massive on day six pointer in its own right, alongside serving notice that albeit no rash predictions issued from our Camp ignore us at your peril written all over it)

to the first half action our table topping visitors were stunned early on by a swift inter change down the left flank Dwight Gayle playing in Aaron Best to
fire purposefully across the face of keeper Belcher's right sided post low and hard this after 2 minutes and a great early fillip but Ramblers are an excellent
side soon clawing themselves back into contention front runner Billy Hunt showing real awareness to level and then put his side in front during which
can only be described as their  best spell of the game, even given the fact that the Leslie field clubs striker recieved liberal assistance towards the
second with more than a hint of the offside flag not being raised plus slack marking playing an additional helping hand

from their on in Stansted raised the tempo significantly with Cornwell holding the ball up superbly John Bricknell never afraid to go in where it hurts
and Danny Hopkins such a live wire with much of the ammunition played in to feet by wingman Dwight Gayle such a purposeful performer however
frustration levels were definitely the order of the day for us, as a combination of good defending left fullback Harry Stevens hacking at least two
goalbound efforts off the line as did central defender Mark Gorbell in a packed defensive rearguard that somehow held out until the break

HALF TIME  STANSTED 1  BURNHAM RAMBLERS  2

The sanctuary of the dressing room and this is where managers earn their corn Terry Spillane sending his players out with renewed belief which apart
from one blip, just three minutes into the half should have seen Ramblers restore the 2 goal cushion and be in a position to push on at 3-1 but number
nine Chris Lewis presented with opportunity basically with the goal at his mercy snatched at the chance and fired his close range effort at the underside
of keeper Joe Taylors crossbar before bouncing down on our goalline before being cleared by the grateful former Waltham Abbey keeper

this roller coaster of emotion cranked up a gear with both outfits making changes to personnell but the home cause appeared to have the greater
momentum and this payed off Hopkins having moments previous seen his effort cleared off the line at the club house end kept his nerve and picking
up its rebound fired his side level low and hard 2-2 and in Darts parlance very much game on

the clock fast running down brought an infusion of further urgency into our play the leveller gave encouragement that it was indeed viable to go for broke, by now Danny Cornwell was providing big problems for the visiting rearguard the introduction of Kevin Vallis had given it fresh legs before the final
re-enactment of the end game (Oxby's delightfully floated free kick and Danny's header that meant so much) and a rearguard action capable of defending it.

all in all an excellent Stansted showing top performers Danny Cornwell, Dwight Gayle, Danny Hopkins, and Jack Dallender, quality support cast Aarron Best and John Bricknell alongside Billy Sendall before losing out to cramp late on.
